Student Testimonials

Hi! I am Tong Wu, a research assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, a guitarist, and a drummer. Since joining CEDAR’s Reading Strategies & Critical Analysis classes in 2015, I have also become a lover of classic literature. Though I believe that my work in engineering will provide me with money, acknowledgement, and a sense of achievement as I give back to society, I think that life requires much more than satisfaction from a job. I am a strong believer of Nietzsche’s words that “We have art in order not to die of the truth.” Music and reading are essential parts of my physical and mental wellbeing.

Hello, everyone! I am Summer, a sixth grader who loves to read. Since I started learning English at CEDAR 4 years ago, my English proficiency has improved quickly and my Lexile score has skyrocketed to 1208! At first, I was reading picture books. Then, I started reading the Magic Tree House series, which was really difficult for me initially. Thanks to the encouragement and kindness my teachers and parents showed me, though, I never gave up and read every day. My reading speed and comprehension improved quickly. I even read the entire Twilight series (almost 1,200,000 words) in a few months! Now, I am reading classics in English with Miss Julia. During these four years of learning English, I have felt very happy and excited, and I’ve gradually grown to love reading. I hope that with my teacher's guidance, I can continue to progress and reach my highest potential!
